- A volunteer fire brigade was established in 1881, the engine being kept at David Hyslop's posting stables in Brook Street.The brigade was taken over and re-formed by the U.D.C. in 1901, and the council depot built in Beaumont Road in 1911 included accommodation for the engine. In 1964 the county council opened a new fire station in Essex Road
